Fleur van der Heul offers individual Executive Function Coaching, as well as customized Executive Functioning Skill Workshops to parents and teachers.

Executive Function Coaching helps students improve their academic performance by learning executive function skills necessary to work more efficiently and effectively at school and at home. Executive functions are the self-regulating skills that we all use to accomplish tasks, from getting ready in the morning to doing homework. Executive functioning skills help us plan and organize activities, sustain attention, and persist to complete tasks. In addition, executive functioning skills allow us to make decisions, shift between situations or thoughts, regulate our emotions and impulsivity, and monitor our thoughts in order to work efficiently and effectively.

Some students have weaknesses in executive functions and, regardless of how bright they are, struggle to do schoolwork and stay on top of tasks as a result. Schoolwork can become a nightmare because they regularly lose homework assignments or start week-long assignments the night before they are due.

Some of the common signs of executive function difficulties are:

Organizational issues:

  • Frequently losing or forgetting important items

  • Being unable to maintain a clean room, desk, or locker

Time-management difficulties:

  • Struggling with meeting deadlines for schoolwork

  • Struggling to be on time due to disorganization or poor planning

  • Difficulty moving from one task to the next in a timely manner

  • Struggling with getting ready in the morning or getting ready for bed

Poor academic achievement:

  • Difficulty memorizing facts, digesting important information, organizing thoughts in writing

  • Difficulty solving multi-step problems

  • Difficulty completing and handing in homework

  • Struggles with persistence and sustained attention

Executive Functioning Coaching can be helpful for individuals of all ages (e.g. children, adolescents, adults) who struggle with any area of executive function. Executive Functioning Coaching is found to be particularly helpful for individuals who are underachieving at school or work.

An Executive Functioning Coach supports individuals in becoming successful, independent learners who can make the daily and long-term decisions necessary to achieve important self-selected life goals. Examples of areas that an Executive Functioning Coach will be working on are:

  • Effective time-management skills

  • Effective study strategies

  • Strategies to manage distractions and improve focus, and sustained attention

  • Emotion regulation strategies

Executive Functioning Coaching can take place at the office and at home, but can also involve sessions over the phone or online (Skype). The frequency and length of sessions depend on the individual, and will be decided on collaboratively.

Due to an increased interest, Fleur van der Heul is now also offering a customized Executive Functioning Skills Workshop for teachers and parents. The workshop will discuss eight specific executive functioning skills that students need in order to become successful, independent learners. It will also discuss how executive functioning skills affect students' learning and how they can be improved. Participants of this workshop will leave with a theoretical understanding of executive functioning skill and many practical strategies to use in order to improve executive functioning skills.

If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity please leave a message or call Fleur at 604-265-7294.
